An autumn wedding in the Yarra Valley hills

Amelia and Kit wanted the hills behind them as they said their vows, and they got them. They married in early autumn on a garden lawn in the Yarra Valley: white chairs lined up on the gravel, hydrangeas still in bloom around the arbour, and the ranges fading blue behind it all.

Halfway through Amelia’s vows the wind took her card clean out of her hand. Before she’d stopped laughing I had the printed copy from my folder in her hand, and she finished every word. Afterwards the two of them walked out into the paddock while the light went soft, just them and the hills.

A few practical notes

Book the late afternoon, not the midday glare: in the valley the light comes in low over the ranges after four. Plan for wind on the slopes, because it always finds you, so I bring a mic that copes. Tell your guests to bring a warm layer, as valley evenings cool fast even after a warm day. And the Yarra Valley is further than 40 km from Brunswick, so I quote the travel in writing before you book.
